While I love photographing weddings in Key West, it’s always refreshing to get off the island to photograph weddings around Florida and around the country. I knew after photographing Anna and Russell’s engagement session in Orlando that their wedding was going to be awesome; these two just can’t stop laughing when they are together.
Their wedding was held at the Howey Mansion, an old building that is a relative newcomer as a wedding venue. When you see photos online of the decline of this once grand 1920’s era mansion, you can’t believe the transformation it underwent. In 2017 it opened as an event and wedding space, and it is realty magnificent.
The mansion went perfectly with their “speakeasy” theme. They really have done an excellent job of the restoration of this building, making it seem upscale, but without losing the original integrity of the windows, halls, and the property.
It really felt like a slice of “Old Florida” mixed with the feel of a medieval castle once the sun goes down and night falls. We took advantage of portraits all over the mansion; there are so many nooks and crannies and great places to take photos. Such a stunning example of Central Florida architecture!
Traveling to photograph weddings is one of my favorite parts of my job. While in some ways it’s easier to photograph weddings that are literally minutes from my doorstep, I find that when I come home from photographing a wedding away from the Keys that I see things differently, and I like that.
There’s the obvious difference in landscape and traditions, but the thing I always come back to is that I love capturing the feeling at these weddings. No matter if a wedding is in Italy or Colorado or in Florida, the dynamic of each wedding is different, and that’s what keeps me coming back to journalistic wedding photography year after year.
I so appreciate clients like Anna and Russell who are willing to bring me up from Key West to photograph them in the places they love; it’s just amazing to me how many great couples I have worked with all over the world. I never take that for granted.
As the sun went down at Anna and Russell’s wedding, the laughter kept on rolling. We stole away for some dramatic night shots, because who the heck doesn’t want to dance in the moonlight in front of a mansion on your wedding day?
Thanks, Anna and Russell, for bringing me up to photograph your amazing wedding at this truly unique location. What a day it was!
