An Intimate Thanksgiving Wedding at Flat Iron Hotel in Asheville, NC

I wasn’t planning to photograph a wedding on Thanksgiving weekend. But sometimes, the best stories start with a random text from a chef.

A few days before Thanksgiving, I got a message from the team at Luminosa, the restaurant tucked beneath the historic Flat Iron Hotel in downtown Asheville. They asked if I was available for a wedding—in two days. I honestly thought it was a prank. A micro-wedding during a holiday, with no details? It sounded too last-minute to be real.

But then I got on the phone with Liz and Andrew.

They were kind, laid-back, and clear about what they wanted: a relaxed, meaningful wedding surrounded by their closest friends and family. Once I spoke to them, it all clicked. They were my kind of couple. So I packed my gear, charged my batteries, and showed up the next morning, ready to document a Thanksgiving wedding day that unfolded like a series of intentional, unscripted moments.

Micro Wedding at Flat Iron Hotel and Luminosa

Andrew and Liz chose the Flat Iron Hotel as the backdrop for their celebration. If you’ve ever walked past its Art Deco facade, you know it has that quiet, old-school charm Asheville is known for.

We started with an intimate ceremony inside Luminosa, surrounded by warm wood, soft lighting, and a cozy holiday morning hum. The restaurant was still—no regular dinner service, no crowd—just their people. It was personal in a way that big venues can’t always deliver.

It wasn’t about trends. No Pinterest boards. Just connection.

Asheville Streets, Brunch at The Restoration, and Golden Hour Vibes

After the ceremony, we hit the streets of downtown Asheville—just the three of us. With zero pressure and plenty of time, we roamed alleys and side streets, chased reflections in shop windows, and paused at crosswalks when the light hit just right. No agenda. No shot list.

Just the real stuff.

From there, we headed to The Restoration Hotel for a brunch-style reception. Think mimosas, deep laughs, and everyone finally breathing after the ceremony. It was slow-paced in the best way.

Later that afternoon, we linked back up and did it again—different light, different vibe. We looped around Asheville for a few more portraits before ending the evening back at Luminosa for dinner. There was no DJ, no big production, just a long table, great food, and good conversation.

And the wildest part? They gave me a seat at the table, not a vendor seat in the corner. A real spot, like family.

Why I Love These Kinds of Weddings

Weddings like this are what I live for—ones that feel real from start to finish.

There’s something about showing up with a camera and getting handed trust on day one. There’s no timeline overload, no overthinking the photos, just a couple saying, “Be part of it. Capture what matters.”

Andrew and Liz didn’t just want a photographer—they wanted someone who could see their day as it felt. And that’s exactly what I aim to do.

If you’re planning a small wedding in Asheville and want to skip the noise, focus on presence, and have someone document it without turning it into a production, I’m your guy.
